WHY do we pay the highest council tax in Merthyr?

Bedlinog and Trelewis is the only Ward in Merthyr Tydfil that still has Community Council. We pay on average an extra 33p per week (£17.74 per year) to keep our Community Council.

BUT....What do we get in return?

Every year Bedlinog Community Council pay out thousands of pounds to help local groups in our area and support projects that benefit the people of Bedlinog and Trelewis. Without this support many community groups would struggle to make ends meet and have the worry of finding money through sometimes very complicated funding applications.

Some of what Bedlinog Community Council financially supported during 2006:

  • Helped with the running costs of Tiddlers Community Playgroup at Bedlinog Resource Centre
  • League fees and referee costs for Trelewis Amateur Football Club
  • Contribution towards the cost of signs for the "Public Place Orders on the Shingrig Estate
  • Trelewis OAP Association with a contribution towards the legal fees of obtaining a lease on Trelewis OAP Hall
  • Legal costs for a lease on the old Playground at the rear of Hylton Terrace, on which Communities First plan a Multi Use Games Area
  • Costs for the Citizens Advice Bureau to come to Bedlinog Resource Centre and the Railway Inn, for local people to access the service
  • Contribution to local activities and events such as the Big V Festival and It's a Knockout!
  • Craig Yr Hendre Tenants and Residents Association with renovation work
  • Helped reward local children and young people for helping in the community with a free trip to Alton Towers
  • Paid for a new mother and baby group to set up and help towards the cost of a trip to Brecon Mountain Railway
  • Helps local people represent us in leagues such as the Welsh Bowls Team, Wales Hockey Tournaments, Welsh Snooker Championships

The Community Council meet every fortnight and alternate locations of Bedlinog Community Centre and Trinity Chapel in Trelewis.

Any voluntary group can apply for a grant as long as it benefits the residents of Bedlinog and/or Trelewis.

If you would like more information, want details of how you can apply for money from Bedlinog Community Council or would like to become involved yourself, Please contact Sherelle Jones at Bedlinog Resource Centre on 01443 710821.
