Taff Bargoed Regeneration Programme

Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council and the Taff Bargoed Regeneration Partnership are working with key stakeholders in the public, private and voluntary sector to revitalise the communities in the Taff Bargoed Valley.

Taff-Bargoed-Regeneration-Strategy 2006 identified key issues and areas for development to promote the economic and community development of the valley. The Taff Bargoed Regeneration Partnership  was set up to take forward the action plan. The Board is made up from representatives from the Taff Bargoed Communities First Partnership, Treharris Area Community Trust, Taff Bargoed Development Trust, key stakeholders and commmunity groups, WAG and MTCBC.

The Taff Bargoed Regeneration Programme focuses on the three settlements of Bedlinog, Trelewis and Treharris, but also aims to develop the potential of Parc Taf Bargoed which forms the green heart of the valley.

Heads of the Valleys funding has been secured to improve Parc Taf Bargoed. The Lakeside Activity Centre is now open. The centre is fully accesible and has a Tourist Information Kiosk, toilets and baby change, along with facilities for the Aberfan Canoe Club and Taff Bargoed Angling Club. More information on activities in the Parc can be found at http://www.visitmerthyr.co.uk/information/tourist-information-centre

An application is being developed to the EU Convergence programme to secure funding for the following projects:

  • Cwm Felin Conservation Area in Bedlinog
  • Treharris Town Centre
  • Trelewis High Street
  • Trelewis & Treharris Gateways

We are also developing a project in Parc Taf Bargoed to extend the Parc Pavilion, improve biodiversity, develop informal play in the park along with heritage and environmental activities. Funding has been secured from the Heads of the Valleys Programme to extend the Parc Pavilion and an application has been submitted to the Big Lottery Fund and a decision is expected in December 2009.

The initial designs for Treharris Town Centre can be viewed at the Communities First Office, 8 Perrott Street between now and December 2009
