The Building
In November 2008 Maxiom submitted a tender for the erection of a new up to date community centre and the demolition of an old existing facility. Maxiom was pleased to be offered the opportunity to build this new centre and contribute to the community of Quakers Yard.
The single storey facility with its large main hall, kitchen and office, promises to be a social hub for the community. With modern technology such as a cat 5 network, media projector, plasma screens and IT training facility, the centre will have a lot to offer.
Maxiom has worked within the constraints of the funding bodies associated with the project, namely the lottery, Coalfields and CAFAP. Ken Bateman a chartered surveyor appointed to oversee the project said the following of Maxiom, “Since being appointed Maxiom limited has been a responsible principal contractor throughout and diligent in its work. The team have completed the project within the timescales and budget of the contract. Their work on site and that of their sub contractors has been of quality that is both acceptable to myself and my clients.”

The members of Quakers Yard Community Association were responsible for raising the funding. The group showed exceptional commitment and dedication in obtaining grants and raising local funds to enable them to build a brand new Community Centre on the site of an Old Age Pensioners hut. They have also obtained funding to employ a caretaker and the venue will be available to all organisations to deliver services in the community. The centre is run by the volunteers working with the caretaker.

Grand Opening The committee held a Grand Opening event on the 11 June 2009. Robert Sidoli the Welsh International attended and cut the ribbon on the new community facility. Guests were invited to gather in the main function room where the Treharris Male Voie Choir sang some classics from their repertoire followed by a fantastic buffet spread prepared by the committee.
