On August 26th 2009, the Big Valley festival took place at Taff Bargoed Park in Trelewis. Despite the awful weather, there was a great turn out from the local community who took part in the many activities and taster sessions that were offered. These included Brick laying, bush-craft, horse riding, archery, paintballing, wax model making, face painting and many more. This year the festival coincided with the launch of Taff Bargoed Park’s lakeside activity centre. The new buildings were officially opened by His Worship the Mayor Cllr Glenn Price and Tom James (Wales international Rugby Player).
Representatives of Merthyr College, Bridges to Work, Job Match, A4e connect to work, SMT youth Mentoring scheme were on hand to promote higher education, training and employment through the various services they offer. The exercise referral scheme, Way of Life Project, Cardiff city Football Club and our local fitness instructor provided advice and guidance on staying fit and healthy through exercise and nutrition. The community had a chance to create healthy stir-fry’s and curries with the way of life team, get involved in football workshops with the CCFC community coaches, and even have a relaxing massage afterwards!
There was plenty to amuse the children with a clown show, face painting, tropical and farm-yard animals, rodeo bull, painting and colouring-in activities.
Local businesses from the Taff Bargoed area were in attendance to showcase the products they offer including Catering, Artwork, local post office, and wood carvings.
A great day was had by all. Thanks go to all those that helped make the day a success and those that gave financial assistance including;
MTCBC, Interegg, Collabor8 Countryside Council of Wales, Merthyr Tydfil Rural Development Plan, Communities First and MTCBC Community Education.
