What is Communities First?
Communities First is an initiative from the Welsh Assembly Government.  The aim of the programme is to reduce poverty and help improve lives of people who live and work in the poorest areas of Wales.
In Order to ascertain which areas (wards) were the most deprived, the Welsh Index of Multiple Depravation was designed, which ranked every ward in Wales in order of its depravity.

The TREHARRIS Ward did not qualify as a whole ward because it was ranked 249 on the index of mulitple depravation, which was the least deprived of all wards in the Borough.

The Communities First area in Treharris therefore only covers the Town area, it does not include Quakers Yard or Edwardsville but despite this all our community events and community support are open to all members of the public.

For further information on Communities First please see contact details below, our members of staff will be happy to assist you for Funding applications for your community groups or project ideas.  Also at the new office in Treharris, Job Point is available Monday - Friday 9.00am - 5.00pm.

Maria Roberts and Jinny Mitten joined Communities First in May 2009 when Treharris Communities First merged with Bedlinog/Trelewis, recent projects/events completed are:

Treharris Communities First Launch Day

On the 29th October 2009, Taff Bargoed Communities First held an event to launch the new offices in Treharris. Service providers who attended the event included MTCBC Regeneration Department, Parks Department, Road Safety, Rights of Way, War on Waste, Countryside Council for Wales, Safer Merthyr Tydfil, NLC, Credit Union, Age Concern & Merthyr Valley Homes. Many community members took advantage of the pamper sessions available throughout the day including reflexology, massage & nail art whilst the younger members of the community enjoyed face painting, Indian Henna and a bouncy castle.

Bethania Chapel

Communities First worked in partnership with Tidy Towns, Keep Wales Tidy, Greenfingers Gardening Club and Bethania Chapel to transform a redundant piece of land adjacent to Bethania Chapel into a community garden. Funding for the project was awarded via Keep Wales Tidy and Treharris Area Community Trust (TACT) and Tidy Towns provided free labour. Greenfingers Gardening Club have also agreed to maintain the garden in the future.

Taff Bargoed Communities First Office is now based at:
